Easy sewing tutorial: I sew my maxi favorite Maison Fauve
Way too cute to miss, the scrunchie is the most adorable AND super easy to sew accessory of the summer! A star of the 80s and 90s, it's a little Proust hair madeleine, a fun accessory that we'll love to wear.
The darling by Maison Fauve
The scrunchie is back in force this summer, and it doesn't intend to go unnoticed: in a maxi and ultra-colorful version, it really stands out for hairstyles that don't take themselves too seriously. My preference goes to the large models, which we will obviously wear in the hair to embellish a ponytail or a bun, but which are also very beautiful on the wrist, a scrunchie bracelet like a mega jewel... There will be no question of hiding it in your handbag like a banal elastic :)

Brands have of course seized on the phenomenon, and you can find scrunchies at all prices: I've seen a lot of models around €15/20 but some luxury brands go so far as to charge more than €600 for this little piece of elasticated fabric (that's expensive for a scrunchie, even one from Prada...).
My hand-sewn favorite

If we look at this trend with our discerning seamstress eye, the DIY scrunchie has it all: perfect for using up the end of a piece of fabric, very easy and quick to sew (we promise it'll be done in 30 minutes max), we're not going to hold back from trying it out!
Obviously the choice of fabric is decisive in the look you want to give to your sewing:
-
Matchy match with a little summer top in printed poplin (I'm already imagining a Solaris poplin scrunchie)
-
Almost chic, even precious, in fine jacquard (mmm, the Golden Hour jacquard scrunchie really tempts me)
-
Why not a romantic lace scrunchie if the elastic doesn't contrast too much?
-
Focus on color and material, we opt for a discreetly shimmering fabric like our lamé lyocell
I had fun putting together a step-by-step video guide for you, which you can find among our selection of educational videos on our YouTube channel and on our Instagram profile, which immerses you in the world of Maison Fauve.
I also detail below the sewing steps for the maxi frilly scrunchie. It's THE beginner sewing project , and our scrunchie tutorial will allow you to obtain the perfect model to make the most of your fabric scraps.
Materials for sewing a scrunchie

-
A strip of fabric 16 cm high and 16 cm long with a width of 16 cm. I used our Rouge Passion lamé fabric , so the strip is 16 x 160 cm, but a 16 x 140 cm strip will also give you a nice sized scrunchie.
-
A spool of thread to match your fabric
-
17 cm of 10 mm elastic (this measurement will depend on the "elasticity" of your elastic, the one used in this tutorial has a little firmness)
-
A safety pin
-
A hand needle for finishing touches
-
A Chinese chopstick
Sewing steps
-
Fold your strip of fabric over itself right sides together, and pin along the entire length BUT BE CAREFUL, leave about 5-6 cm unassembled at the beginning and end of your strip of fabric. Sew 1 cm from the edge, starting and stopping your seams with forward/backward stitches
-
Place your strip right side up (slide one end into your assembly and slide it using a chopstick, such as a Chinese chopstick, if necessary)
-
Iron because your fabric must have creased quite a bit
-
Now you'll need to pin the ends of your strip right sides together. To do this, fold the edge of the strip so that you can see the wrong side, and slide it back on itself again until the two ends of the strip are facing each other, right sides together on the fabric. Pin edge to edge, and sew 1 cm from the edge.
-
Passing through the small opening located at the end of your strips (and still not closed at this stage) turn your work right side out. You will obtain a "ring" of fabric with a small unsewn portion. Iron the seam allowances of the part still open by folding them inwards by 1 cm, this will make the final sewing step easier.
-
Attach the safety pin to the end of your elastic. Then insert it "into" your future scrunchie, and secure the other end of the elastic by pinning it to the fabric. You will then slide the elastic inside the fabric, using the safety pin as a support (and the pinned part will stay in place). The further you advance the elastic, the more your frills will start to accumulate (future wonder in sight)
-
Retrieve the elastic attached to the safety pin through the opening, detach the pin and then pin the 2 ends of the elastic together. Sew 1 cm from the edge (multiply the seams so that they withstand repeated pulling over time)
-
Your maxi scrunchie is almost finished, all you have to do now is close the part that is still open by hand sewing (the pre-folds marked with an iron will allow you to have a nice clean edge)
HOURRRAAAA BRAVVOOOOO your scrunchie is ready to be tied in your hair, or slipped onto your wrist, and I can feel that you are already fidgeting at the idea of sewing several: to treat yourself, to give as a gift, it's the little accessory that will cause a sensation!
