What fabric should I use to sew my pretty bow?
In this tutorial, we will show you how to make an elegant and trendy bow, to be attached to a clip barrette. We designed this DIY in three Maison Fauve fabrics that reveal all the beauty of the shape:
-
Poésie Bois de Rose jacquard, soft and structured at the same time, for a romantic and refined look.
-
Lunares Encre polka dot fabric, which plays with contrast and gives an irresistible retro style.
-
Tango Red tencel satin, fluid and luminous, for a chic and daring effect.
Each material brings a different personality to your accessory. We recommend flexible fabrics to obtain a beautifully draped bow, such as cotton, viscose, silk, fine and very flexible tailored wool, or light denim like our Macadam denim.
Everything you need to sew my bow barrette
To make your pretty accessory, you will need:
-
A fabric scrap measuring 80x20 cm
-
A 40x20 cm piece of Vlieseline G710 fusible interfacing
-
A barrette clip, like our clip barrette base
-
Matching sewing thread
-
A hand sewing needle for some finishing touches
The bow pattern
The pattern consists of 2 pieces:
-
The main band to be cut x2 on the fold
-
The central band to be cut x1

Also cut 2 rectangles of 32x7 cm of G710 fusible interfacing. Fuse each main band (on the wrong side of the fabric) by centering the interfacing.
Your pieces are ready to start sewing. Seam allowances are included and are 1 cm.

Steps to sew the bow barrette
-
Pin the 2 main bands right sides together and edge to edge, leaving a 6 cm opening to turn the pieces right side out later.
-
Sew 1 cm from the edge, clip the corners, and turn the band right side out. Press well, emphasizing the corners, then fold the seam allowance of the unsewn part inwards and press again to flatten the fabric.
-
Close the unsewn portion with hand stitching.

-
Fold the band over itself and make a vertical seam 16 cm from the fold. Your bow is taking shape.
-
Unfold the bow to center the fold you just stitched. Make a second vertical seam, overlapping the previous one, to stabilize your bow.
-
"Gather" your bow in the middle to shape it and create the illusion of "knotted" fabric by pressing the edges with your fingers. Stabilize the bow in this position with thread that you will wrap and tie.

-
The central band: Mark a 1 cm fold with an iron, wrong sides together, on the top and bottom of the band. Then fold the band over itself RST and pin edge to edge, unfolding the pre-folds. Sew 1 cm from the edge, then turn the band right side out and press well. Fold the pre-folds at the ends of the band to tuck them inside and press again to define "neat" ends.

-
Lay the central band flat in front of you and position the bow on it, wrong side facing you. Take the barrette clip, open it, and position the clip back to back with the bow. Slide the ends of the band into it and overlap them, tightening the band around the bow. Sew the ends of the central band with tight hand stitches.
-
Finally, attach the ends of the barrette clip (which have a small hole) to each "dangling" part of the bow with hand stitches.

Congratulations, your bow barrette is finished! Whether it's to tie your hair with style, adorn a messy bun, highlight a fringe like the Demoiselles de Rochefort, or add a Maison Fauve touch to a simple outfit, this bow barrette will quickly become an essential in your accessories collection. It's also a great handmade gift idea.
