What fabric should I use to sew my pretty bow?
In this tutorial, we show you how to make an elegant and trendy bow , to attach to a clip barrette. We have designed this DIY in three Maison Fauve fabrics which reveal all the beauty of the shape:
-
The Poésie Bois de Rose jacquard , both soft and structured, for a romantic and refined look.
-
The Lunares Encre polka dot fabric , which plays with contrast and gives an irresistible retro style.
-
The Rouge Tango tencel satin , fluid and luminous, for a chic and daring effect.
Each material brings a different personality to your accessory. We recommend soft fabrics to create a bow that drapes beautifully, such as cotton, viscose, silk, a fine and very supple tailored wool, or lightweight denim like our Macadam denim.
Everything you need to sew my bow barrette
To make your pretty accessory, you will need:
-
A piece of fabric measuring 80x20 cm
-
A coupon of 40x20 cm Vlieseline G710 iron-on sticker
-
A barrette attachment like our clip barrette holder
-
Sewing thread to match your fabric
-
A hand needle for certain finishing touches
The knot pattern
The pattern has 2 pieces:
-
The main strip to be cut x2 at the fold
-
The central strip to cut x1
Also cut two 32x7 cm rectangles of G710 iron-on adhesive. Iron-on each main strip (on the back of the fabric) by centering the iron-on adhesive.
Your pieces are ready to start sewing. Seam allowances are included and are 1 cm.
The steps for sewing the bow barrette
-
Pin the 2 main strips right sides together and edge to edge, leaving a 6 cm opening to then turn the pieces right side out.
-
Sew 1 cm from the edge, notch the corners and turn the strip right side out. Iron well, paying particular attention to the corners, then fold the seam allowance of the unclosed part inside the strip and iron to flatten the fabric.
-
Close the unsewn portion with a hand seam.
-
Fold the strip back on itself and make a vertical seam 16 cm from the fold. Your bow is taking shape.
-
Spread the knot to center the fold you just sewed. Make a second vertical seam, which merges with the previous one, to stabilize your knot.
-
"Pleat" your knot in the middle to shape it and create the illusion of "knotted" fabric by pressing the edges with your fingers. Stabilize the knot in this position with a thread that you will wrap and knot.
-
The central strip : iron a 1 cm fold, wrong side to wrong side, on the top and bottom of the strip. Then fold the strip back on itself ED/ED and pin edge to edge, unfolding the pre-folds. Sew 1 cm from the edge, then turn the strip right side out and iron well. Fold the pre-folds at the ends of the strip to slide them inside the strip and iron again to define "clean" ends.
-
Place the center strip flat in front of you and place the bow on top of it, wrong side facing you. Take the barrette clip, open it, and place the clip back to back with the bow. Slide the ends of the strip into it and overlap them, tightening the strip around the bow. Sew the ends of the center strip with tight hand stitches.
-
Finally, attach the ends of the barrette clip (with a small hole) to each "falling" part of the knot using hand stitches.
Congratulations, your bow barrette is finished! Whether you're using it to tie your hair back in style, adorn a messy bun, accentuate a Demoiselles de Rochefort-style fringe, or add a Maison Fauve touch to a simple outfit, this hair clip will quickly become a staple in your accessories collection. It's also a lovely handmade gift idea.
