Sewing pattern tutorial: How to sew the Calypso overcoat?

Calypso is an adorable overcoat pattern. Offered at its launch in the Calypso sewing box , it is available in tweed and structured wool. To make it easier to read the video tutorial, we have also made it available in Sergio mid-weight denim . And you can also sew the pattern with gabardine, velvet, tailored wool, and mid-weight fabrics.

Its cut is quite simple, and easy to match with your wardrobe. Calypso does not lack details that give the garment all its singularity: a pretty collar supported by a small collar stand mounted in inlay, patch pockets with flaps, a small bib that embellishes the back and takes up the DNA of overcoats, and the bottom of the sleeves is embellished with a false button placket for a couture look without the technical difficulties of the lined and buttoned bottom of the sleeve.

Its line is rather straight, worked in front by a large waist dart, and its length is located at the small hips (find on the product sheet of the pattern all the finished garment measurements). The gathered back version will bring ease at the bottom and more roundness to the cut.

To vary the styles, and for the pleasure of declining the model, we offer several variations around the pattern:

  • With or without collar

  • Simple back or gathered back

  • With or without decorative tab at the bottom of the sleeves

The pattern is of intermediate sewing level , it does not involve any particular technical difficulties, and will be an opportunity for seamstresses who wish to progress to sew their first lined jacket. The technical points covered in this step-by-step sewing video are:

  • Sewing hollowed out darts

  • Make gathers

  • Assemble a collar with collar stand

  • Placing pockets

  • Fit sleeves and place a sleeve head cigarette

  • How to assemble a lining on a jacket

We support you every step of the way for an easy sewing experience and a hand-sewn project that will make you proud.

Happy sewing!
